The katana " Ha" (刃) is the cutting edge. The kissaki itself is usually quite small, but the overall shape can vary greatly. The name "kissaki" refers to the general contour of the blade tip, which might be rounded or squared off. The kissaki (切先) of a katana is the pointed tip of the blade. It is the blade's sharpest point and is utilized for thrusting and cutting. Yokote is not present in every blade style, such as the uncommon shobu zukuri style blade, whose tip is more suited to slicing than thrusting. The Yokote (横手) is the point line which make the transition between the body of the blade and the kissaki or tip section. Because of their sharpness and strength, katana boshi are often used for thrusting attacks, rather than cutting. Katana boshi are typically made of high-carbon steel, which gives them their distinctive hardness and strength. They are characterized by their sharp, tapered point and their long, curved blade. The katana boshi is the hamon temper line that extends to the kissaki (sword tip) that is commonly found on Japanese swords. The resulting two-toned blade is then carefully etched to bring out the hamon. This line is created by differential hardening, a process in which the body of the blade is heated and quenched in order to create a hard, sharp cutting edge, while the back of the blade is left unhardened. The hamon, "edge pattern", refers to the line that runs along the blade just above the cutting edge. The katana hamon is a type of sword-smithing technique used to create the distinctive patterns seen on Japanese swords. In addition, the shinogi provides a place for the sword's maker to sign their name. The shinogi gives the blade strength and durability, and also helps to deflect enemy attacks. This results in a stronger sword that is less likely to break during battle. This ridge line is created by hammering out a groove in the metal and then folding the metal over itself. On a katana, shinogi typically runs along the entire length of the blade. Shinogi also refers to the line where the blade's edge meets the body of the sword. Shinogi is a Japanese term for " ridge line", the raised portion of a sword's blade, running from the hilt to the point. You can calculate the sori by adding the length of your blade (nagasa) and the perpendicular line that makes the gap between the farthest point of the curve of the katana and the nagasa (see above). It is an important aspect of the sword's design, and affects the way the weapon is used. Katana sori refers to the curve of a katana blade. Nagasa is typically measured in shaku, with one shaku equal to about 11.81" (30 centimeters). The word "nagasa" can also be used to refer to the overall length of a katana, including the hilt and scabbard. Katana nagasa refers to the length of a katana's blade.

She swore they made the chili in house and asked if I’d like a taste. Oh also, the proprietess was having a bowl of chili at a neighboring table so of course I had to bug her. I can’t speak to the barbecue, but the burgers were good. Both were the Sysco frozen variety, edible but only barely. I also had onion rings and my friend fries. Pickles, Jalapeno slices, (both fresh and pickled!), and onion were available at the condiment bar along with mustard, mayo and ketchup, (and Ranch dressing and sriracha mayo). Choice of cheese - American, pepper jack or cheddar. Half pound patty on a sweet, (Sheila Partin?) bun with lettuce and tomato. I had the Chuckwagon Cheeseburger that comes with “One Side”. Hit up Chuckwagon and it’s a nice little place. I revisited this thread in the hope that my ole friend Jaymes had chimed in and lo and behold!!! I could tell you that I had actually “remembered” that Jaymes had chimed in but that would be a lie. Made an unexpected trip out to Katy today to look at a car with a buddy and we were wanting a good burger for lunch. as they don’t seem to be stockpiling them gathering ice. The moral is ask nicely for a freshly cooked meal inside, and if I must go through the drive through I get a double Whataburger Jr. I did e-mail back afterward with a glowing report on the food, service, and cleanliness, all of which was spot on. I wasn’t looking for a free meal but I didn’t turn it down either. I ratted them out in an e-mail to the home office and got a call from the manager the next morning offering a free meal. The Wifeacita was expecting a hot Whataburger but our second little Christmas was ruined as she was very disappointed. Pepper and Coke concoction and wished each other a Merry Christmas in January when our cold pre-cooked burger arrived. The Wifeacita and I did that last week and were rewarded with a nice, hot tray of goodness.Ĭonversely, I gave the dear girl a gift card as a Christmas stocking stuffer and no sooner had she mixed her Dr. The only way to do it right is to dine in and nicely ask for a freshly cooked meal and explain you don’t mind waiting. Rice and Chimney Rock in what was commonly referred to as the Bellaire Triangle. The chili cheese burger is a complete mess but good. I was never a huge fan before, but I’m getting desperate.Īnd yeah, I know all about Christian’s Tailgate, Hubcap Grill, etc. I’ve been looking longingly at a local Fuddrucker’s that I haven’t visited in well over a decade. I simply don’t remember the last time I had a really great burger. These were both at the same location, out Westheimer just west of Kirkwood. They were cold, the buns bordering on stale. I know that’s almost heresy in SE Texas, but nonetheless. My two most recent Whataburgers were just this side of awful. More recently I’ve had great hamburgers at Burger Guys on Westheimer and Ripp’s Grill on Memorial, neither of which exist any more. On a whim I popped into Chili’s last week for an Oldtimer with Cheese, and they’re not nearly as good as I remembered them being. When I first got out of college, (about a hundred years ago), I went to work in Westchase and we ate at the Carillon Chili’s at least three times a week. American listeners (such as myself) may find the Scottish accents bracing. The investigators, Brown and Ellis, are experienced journalists. A two-hour presentation would have been significantly more enjoyable. The creators try their best to squeeze five hours of content out of a situation better served through briefer examination. The case itself is straightforward and there is not much ground to cover. The prosecution’s evidence, as explained in the podcast, is thin. The ins and outs of the Scottish adversarial criminal justice system are closely examined and painted in a negative light. Gilroy maintains his innocence to this day. He is sentenced to life in prison, where he remains. Despite an absence of physical evidence, witnesses, or corpse, Gilroy is convicted of the murder. The prosecution used circumstantial evidence to claim Gilroy killed Pilley, hid her body in the Thistle Street basement, and then dumped the remains in Western Scotland’s Argyll forest. When Pilley misses work, an investigation kicks off. The two pursued their tryst until things began to unravel. Gilroy was married, tPilley was single, and they embarked upon a romantic affair. David Gilroy, 47 years old at the time, was a director at the same firm. Suzanne Pilley was a 38-year-old bookkeeper at IML. It examines the prosecution’s case and Gilroy’s defense. The podcast takes place after the conviction. Pilley’s body has never been found and no physical evidence has turned up. The supposed crime took place at a firm named Infrastructure Mangers Limited (IML) on the heavily referenced Thistle Street in Edinburgh, Scotland. Body of Proof is an analysis of David Gilroy’s conviction in the May 2010 murder of Suzanne Pilley, an event I was not familiar with. A podcast of that same murder without a dash of Truman… not so much.ĭespite my apprehension, I enjoyed the experience. Truman Capote’s In Cold Blood has a presence. A solid author, and their unique voice, seemed impossible to capture in the format. I’ve always preferred reading to listening. I found it through the Audible Originals section. This acceptance led to Body of Proof, a true-crime podcast by Darrel Brown and Sophie Ellis, produced for Amazon’s Audible and released in September 2019. I wanted to see what the “literary” stuff was all about. I test-drove a few more highbrow and prize-winning novels hoping to enhance my cultural depth. With that said, I learned Midnight’s Children is not the best listening for a crime fiction aficionado. As the winner of the Booker of Bookers, Rushdie’s sprawling magical fiction merits its own review. My first venture into this world was Midnight’s Children by Salman Rushdie. "Nobody big except me" is the dream world of Holden Caulfield and his first person story is down to the basic, drab English of the pre-collegiate. The phrase “tour de force” could have been invented for this audacious novel.Ī violent surfacing of adolescence (which has little in common with Tarkington's earlier, broadly comic, Seventeen) has a compulsive impact. Eventually, the tone darkens and the story narrows to focus on Jude as the pain of his past cuts deep into his carefully constructed life. And when Willem becomes a movie star, they all bask in his glow. When Jude, as an adult, is adopted by his favorite Harvard law professor, his friends join him for Thanksgiving in Cambridge every year. JB bases his entire artistic career on painting portraits of his friends, while Malcolm takes care of them by designing their apartments and houses. The four men think about work and creativity and success and failure they cook for each other, compete with each other and jostle for each other’s affection. What we get instead is an intensely interior look at the friends’ psyches and relationships, and it’s utterly enthralling. There aren’t even many markers of what’s happening in the outside world Jude moves to a loft in SoHo as a young man, but we don’t see the neighborhood change from gritty artists’ enclave to glitzy tourist destination. There isn’t a single significant female character, and for a long novel, there isn’t much plot. Two of them are gay, one straight and one bisexual. Yanagihara ( The People in the Trees, 2013) takes the still-bold leap of writing about characters who don’t share her background in addition to being male, JB is African-American, Malcolm has a black father and white mother, Willem is white, and “Jude’s race was undetermined”-deserted at birth, he was raised in a monastery and had an unspeakably traumatic childhood that’s revealed slowly over the course of the book. This process typically takes place at a specialized treatment center. In apheresis, the part of the blood containing stem cells is separated from the rest of the blood, which is returned back to the body. In the next step the blood stem cells are collected from a vein through a process called apheresis, which typically occurs on or around fifth day of mobilization and takes several hours. Mobilization and apheresisĪs a first step, medications are given to help the blood stem cells leave the bone marrow and enter the blood stream – this is known as mobilization. Importantly, gene therapies are often referred to as “one-time treatments” – but while the therapy itself is administered only once, the treatment process from start to finish is complex and has several steps that can take several months. There are many different approaches to ex vivo gene therapy, but the administration process to deliver those different therapies is the same across many modalities. bluebird bio’s gene therapies are introduced ex vivo. In gene addition therapy, a functional gene is introduced into cells either ex vivo – where the cells are modified outside the body and then transplanted back in, or in vivo – where the cells are modified inside the body. Gene addition treats diseases at the genetic level by adding genetic material to a person’s cells to compensate for a missing or faulty gene. Additionally, using a patient’s own stem cells eliminates the risk of graft rejection, which can occur with traditional allogeneic transplants when a recipient’s immune system recognizes a donor’s cells as foreign, although risks commonly associated with mobilization and conditioning still apply. First, there is no need to identify a matched donor, which can be very challenging as only 30% of patients have a genetically matched sibling donor. Autologous HSCT, which is when a patient receives a transplant using their own stem cells has several benefits over traditional stem cell transplants. These cells are very important, as they have the potential to develop into other types of blood cells. This process works by using a patient’s own blood – or hematopoietic – stem cells. Bluebird bio’s three distinct investigational gene therapies utilize gene addition combined with an autologous hematopoietic stem cell transplant (HSCT). Waaahhh!
